  • Abstract: This article presents the manuscript of the Segunda parte del Parnaso antártico, written in Peru in the early decades of the seventeenth century by the Sevilian poet Diego Mexía de Fernangil, which includes a translation of Jerónimo Nadal’s Evangelicæ historiæ imagines in the form of two hundred Castilian sonnets. These poems, written by Mexía as a personal spiritual exercise and addressed to his fellow merchants in Spanish America, exemplify both a meditation on the life of Christ as well as a practice of the Jesuit composition of place based on Nadal’s Adnotationes et meditationes in Evangelia. Through a close reading of Mexía’s verse translation and a comparison with its textual and pictorial original, this article explores the relationship between word and image in early modern emblem books.
